Scott's Reflection

When I was encouraged by a good friend to join them in the Odyssey Project, I was less than excited, I had no great love for school and more importantly homework.  When I saw the list of classes I became I little more interested when I saw History and Philosophy, but Literature and Art History was not setting off any bells and whistles.  With Art History being the first class paired with Philosophy I thought I could just get through it.  I mistakenly thought this would be middle school art class all over again. We would learn different art styles, particular artist and meaningless dates. Well, I was happily wrong while yes, we did learn those things we were given time and most importantly taught how to appreciate all types of art and that there is no mystery to creating art.  Art is a statement about whatever you want to make a statement about, whether it is a deep and powerful statement about the world or just for fun and one’s own personal joy.

This was my think again moment, I love comic book art, visual storytelling and action figures.  Now I can not draw to save my life, so drawing comic book panels was never going to be a thing.  While looking through Instagram I discovered Toy Photography, it is a way of telling visual stories with the characters you love without being able to draw.  While taking Art History and as time went on it has sparked an interest in getting more into toy photography and seeing if I have any stories to tell.  I want to learn how to use a camera and how to edit the photos.  I want to create art; it may never see the light of day, but I had never felt that way before.  I think I may have discovered a way I want to express myself and I have Odyssey to thank for that.
